Fascias & Soffits in Essex
Rotting fascia boards are one of the most common causes of water damage in Essex homes. We replace timber and uPVC fascias, soffits, and bargeboards across the county, usually in a day, and make sure the guttering goes back on straight and draining properly.

Fascia and soffit replacement in Essex
Fascias and soffits don't get much attention until something goes wrong. They sit at the roofline, taking the weather year-round, and on older properties the original timber boards have often been painted over several times rather than replaced. When the timber finally rots through, water gets into the roof void, and the guttering starts to pull away from the wall.
We replace fascias, soffits, and bargeboards across Essex, on 1930s semis in Billericay, post-war bungalows in Basildon, Victorian terraces in Chelmsford, and newer builds across the county. Most jobs are done in a day. We remove the guttering to get at the boards, inspect everything behind them, fit the new boards, and refit the guttering properly aligned.
This work often goes alongside our guttering replacement service. If the fascias have been letting water in for a while, it's also worth having us check the roof tiles and felt while we're there, as part of our general roof repair service.
We use uPVC on most jobs because it simply lasts longer and doesn't need painting. On period properties where timber is the right choice, we use pressure-treated hardwood. We don't use cheap materials and we don't cut corners on the fixing.
- Soft or spongy timber when you press the fascia board
- Paint peeling or flaking from the fascia or soffit
- Guttering pulling away from the house or sitting at an angle
- Visible cracks, splits, or dark staining on the boards
- Damp patches appearing in the roof space or on the top-floor ceiling
- Gaps where the soffit meets the wall or the fascia

How we carry out fascia and soffit replacement
Free site visit and written quote
We come out and take a look at the existing fascias, soffits, and bargeboards, and the guttering too since it all has to come down anyway. We measure up and give you a written price with no obligation and no call-out fee.
Remove the guttering
The guttering has to come down to get to the fascia boards. We remove it carefully and inspect it at the same time. If it's serviceable, it goes back on the new boards. If it needs replacing, we'll tell you and can do it in the same visit.
Remove old fascias and soffits
The old boards come off. We check the rafter ends and the wall plate as we go. If any rafter ends have begun to rot because of failed fascias, we'll advise on repair before the new boards go on. There's no point boarding over a problem.
Fit new boards
New fascia boards and soffits are fitted and fixed back properly. We use materials matched to what was there unless you've asked for a change, for example timber to uPVC. Ventilation soffits are used where the roof needs airflow into the eaves.
Bargeboards if needed
If the gable-end bargeboards also need replacing, we do them at the same time. Same materials, same finish. It keeps everything looking consistent and avoids a second visit.
Refit guttering and clear up
The guttering goes back on to the new fascia, properly aligned for fall and sealed at all the joints. We clear up all waste and leave the site tidy. Most jobs on a standard semi are done in a day.

Why Essex homeowners choose M.W Beal & Son
Same person quotes and does the job
Matt or Joe Beal comes out to quote the work and carries it out themselves. You're not dealing with a salesman who hands off to a crew you've never met. On a job like fascias, where the condition of what's behind the boards matters, having the same person there from start to finish makes a difference.
40+ years on Essex rooflines
We've replaced fascias, soffits, and bargeboards on every type of Essex property, 1930s semis in Billericay, post-war bungalows in Basildon and Wickford, Victorian terraces in Chelmsford, and newer builds across the county. We know what to expect at each property type.
We check what's behind the boards
When the old fascias come off, we check the condition of the rafter ends and any other timber behind them. If something needs attention before the new boards go on, we'll tell you and agree the cost before doing any additional work. We won't board over a problem.
Guttering goes back on properly
A lot of fascia jobs end with guttering that doesn't quite sit right or drain properly. We refit the guttering with the correct fall, reseal all joints, and check it's sitting firmly on the new board. If the guttering itself needs replacing, we'll tell you at the quote stage.

“The fascia boards on the back of our 1950s bungalow had been letting water in for a while and the guttering was hanging at an angle. Matt came out quickly, gave us a written quote, and had the whole job done in a day. He replaced the soffits at the same time as they were in a similar state. Everything looks much better and the guttering actually drains properly now.”

Full fascia, soffit and guttering replacement
“We'd had quotes from a couple of companies, both pushing hard for us to replace absolutely everything. Joe came out, had a proper look, and was honest that only two elevations actually needed doing. The back and side were still sound. We appreciated that he wasn't just trying to upsell. Good job, left the garden tidy, and the price matched the quote exactly.”

Fascia and soffit replacement, two elevations
“Our Victorian terrace in Brentwood had the original timber fascias, which were well past it. Matt matched the timber profile to what was there so it still looks right for the house. He also found that one of the rafter ends had started to rot behind the old board and sorted that out at the same time before re-boarding. Really pleased with the result.”
