Roof Replacement in Essex
When a roof reaches the end of its life, a repair won't cut it. We strip the old covering back to the rafters, check the timberwork underneath, fit new breathable membrane and battens, and lay the new tiles or slate properly.
Based in Stock, covering all of Essex. Free written quotes, no obligation, fully insured.
Roof replacement in Essex
A roof replacement is a bigger job than a repair, but it's also a straightforward one when it's done properly. We strip the old covering back to the rafters, fit new breathable membrane and battens, and then lay the new tiles or slate. Every stage is done by us, no subcontractors.
We work on all the common Essex roof types: concrete interlocking tiles (by far the most common on post-war housing), clay plain tiles on older properties, and natural slate on period cottages and Victorian terraces. We can also replace flat roof sections, on extensions, garages, and outbuildings , in EPDM rubber, GRP fibreglass, or torch-on felt.
Before we quote, we get on the roof and look properly. We won't recommend a full replacement if a repair will do the job. And if the timberwork underneath needs attention, we'll tell you before we start, not halfway through.
- Widespread slipped, cracked, or missing tiles, not just one or two in isolation
- Repeated leaks coming back after repairs, suggesting the underlay has failed
- Moss and algae across the whole roof surface, often a sign of ageing material
- Sagging or uneven roof surface, could point to underlying timber issues
- Ridge and hip tiles that keep lifting because the mortar has broken down
- A roof that's 40–50+ years old with no recorded work and original felt
How we carry out a roof replacement
Free site visit and written quote
We come out, get up on the roof properly, and assess the condition of the covering, underlay, battens, and visible timberwork. You get a written quote before anything is agreed.
Strip the old roof covering
We remove all the old tiles or slates, and strip back the underlay and battens. This is when we find out the true condition of the roof timbers, we show you anything that needs attention and agree any additional work before we proceed.
Inspect and repair the timberwork
Any damaged or rotten rafters, purlins, or ridge boards are repaired or replaced at this stage. There's no point in laying a new covering over failing timberwork.
Fit new membrane and battens
We fit a new breathable roofing membrane (underlay) and new treated softwood battens. These are the components most often skipped on a cheap job, and they're what keeps the roof dry if any tile slips in future.
Lay new tiles or slate
Tiles are bedded and pointed correctly; slates are nailed to gauge. Ridge and hip tiles are re-bedded in fresh mortar. We also re-lead any flashings around chimneys, dormers, and valleys where needed.
Tidy up and sign off
We clear all waste from the site, and the job is only signed off when you're happy. You receive a written guarantee on both materials and workmanship.

Why Essex homeowners choose M.W Beal & Son
Father & son, no subcontractors
Matt and Joe Beal do the work themselves. The person who quotes the job is the person who carries it out. You won't come home to a crew you've never met.
40+ years on Essex roofs
We've replaced roofs on every type of Essex property, Victorian terraces in Chelmsford, 1930s semis in Billericay, post-war bungalows, and modern new-builds. We know what to expect.
We don't cut corners on the underlay
New breathable membrane and new treated battens are fitted as standard. We don't re-use old battens or skip the underlay to save time. The covering is only as good as what's underneath it.
Timberwork inspected before we start
We check the rafters, ridge board, and purlins when the roof is stripped. If anything needs attention, we tell you and agree on the cost before we proceed, no surprises mid-job.

What our customers say

“We'd had people quote our roof before and they all told us different things. Matt came out, got up on the roof, showed us exactly what the problem was, and gave us a fair written price. The job was done on time, the garden was left tidy, and the roof's been solid since. Can't fault them.”

“The old felt had given out on our extension roof after about 25 years. Joe came and had a look within a couple of days of us calling, explained what was needed without any hard sell, and the new EPDM rubber roof was done within the week. Neat finish and a proper guarantee in writing.”

“Really pleased with the work on our 1930s semi in Brentwood. The original clay tiles were past it and some of the timberwork needed attention too. Matt pointed that out before he started, didn't just discover it halfway through and hit us with extra costs. Honest, experienced, and a tidy job all round.”
